Serve Return Tips

  • During a match, one of the most important aspects of the game is the return of the service. Make sure to vary the return such as the location, the spin, but also the depth.
  • If your opponent is fairly comfortable in short games and has an efficient flip, try to return the serve not too short. In this situation, the return should preferably make only two bounces on the table (that is the second bounce should be near the white line on the opposite side). This makes the flip much harder and your opponent could be confused between trying to flip and trying to start attacking. Usually with such a return, if the second bounce is near the white line, it would be difficult for the opponent to return the ball short, so you get the chance to start attacking first.
  • While waiting for the service, try to mask until the last instant where you’re going to return the service by changing your hand stroke just before contact with ball.
  • If your opponent has difficulties with short balls, then the best scenario would be a mixture of very short returns and deep long returns during the match.
