Varying your serves late in a match

5/24/2006All players have their favorite serves and do them quite often. This is actually a good thing because the player is comfortable and has confidence when using them. But, in a five-game match your opponent starts to get comfortable and also confident when returning your favorite serves. So, I recommend that when playing the last two games in a match, that you use a serve that you have not used previously. Your opponent might be surprised at your new serve and miss the return or make a very weak one, making it easy for you to win the point. If your opponent is not bothered by it, or you do not gain any tactical advantage, you can always go back to your favorite serves.
