12 Killer Tips

  1. When attacking, try to attack the opponent’s middle. This does not mean the middle of the table; instead, the middle lies a few inches within the elbow area.
  2. Try returning serves with your forehand. When doing so, you can keep your opponent on their toes because it is harder to anticipate the placement of your shot.
  3. When serving, do not be afraid to serve long and deep or even half long. The half-long serve is effective because most people are indecisive about attacking that serve and it is hard to return that serve short.
  4. Keep your eye on the ball and try watching the opponent with your peripheral vision.
  5. When returning serves, there is no need to make the perfect serve return. The most important thing is to keep the ball on the table and be ready for the second ball.
  6. Do not shift your weight too early before you have moved or else you can end up reaching for the ball.
  7. When flipping or pushing, keep your elbow bent. Many people straighten their arms and end up losing control of the ball.
  8. When the score is close at the end of a game, do not panic or think about winning. Stay calm and play as if the score was 0–0. Think about playing one point at a time.
  9. When serving, incorporate the waist to get a little extra speed and spin. It also helps you get to a neutral position quickly.
  10. A lot of people worry about serving with a lot spin. Sometimes it is good to serve no spin to your opponent. It does not give them a lot to work with and they will have to create their own spin themselves.
  11. Don’t be afraid to serve down the line to someone’s forehand (if you are right handed serving to a right-hander). This is especially effective when your opponent likes to step around and use their forehand.
  12. For a neutral stance, you should have your right leg behind your left leg (if you are right handed; reverse it if you are left handed). This stance is considered to be more favorable for the forehand and it also helps minimize your middle area.
